Life as a Christian is not promised to be easy. In fact, God never said that believers would be free from trials and troubles. These difficult moments often feel overwhelming, but they serve a deeper purpose. Trials can push us toward God, the Rock of Ages, drawing us closer to His strength and grace. Instead of resenting hardships, learning to be thankful for them can transform our faith and deepen our relationship with God.
Understanding the Purpose of Trials
Challenges are not random or meaningless. The Bible teaches that trials refine our character and faith. When life is smooth, it’s easy to feel self-sufficient and forget our need for God. But when difficulties arise, they reveal our weaknesses and push us to rely on God’s power.
For example, the apostle Paul faced many hardships, including imprisonment and persecution. Yet, he described these trials as opportunities to experience God’s strength in his weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). This shows that struggles can be a way God works in us to build endurance, patience, and hope.
How Trials Draw Us Closer to God
When we face troubles, we often seek comfort and answers. This search can lead us to prayer, scripture, and fellowship with other believers. These spiritual practices help us connect with God on a deeper level.
Prayer becomes a lifeline, allowing us to express our fears and ask for guidance.
Reading the Bible reminds us of God’s promises and faithfulness.
Community support encourages us and reminds us we are not alone.
These steps help us experience God’s presence in a tangible way. The more we turn to Him during hard times, the stronger our faith grows.
Being Thankful for Trials

Being thankful for difficulties might seem counterintuitive, yet expressing gratitude during trials
can change our perspective. Rather than concentrating on pain or loss, we acknowledge how challenges contribute to our spiritual growth. I recently heard someone on a podcast say, "Sometimes you have to kiss the waves that crash us into the Rock of Ages." That quote really resonated with me.
Consider the story of Joseph in the Old Testament. He endured betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment, yet he remained faithful. Later, Joseph saw how those hardships prepared him to save many lives during famine (Genesis 50:20). His story encourages us to trust that God can use our trials for good.
Practicing gratitude during tough times can:
Reduce anxiety and despair
Increase resilience and hope
Strengthen our trust in God’s plan
Practical Ways to Find Strength in Trials
Here are some practical steps to help you lean on God during difficult seasons:
Keep a journal to record prayers, answers, and lessons learned.
Memorize scripture that speaks about God’s faithfulness and strength.
Join a small group or church community for encouragement.
Serve others even when you struggle; it shifts focus and builds compassion.
Reflect on past trials and how God helped you overcome them.
These actions help transform trials from burdens into opportunities for growth.
